AI Visibility · The Plain-English Guide
Is the AI naming you - or your competitor?
AI visibility is whether an AI - ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude - names your business when someone asks a question you should be the answer to. That's it. No jargon needed.
Think about how you search now. You don't always scroll ten blue links anymore. You ask. "Who's a good SEO consultant on the Central Coast?" And something answers you, in a sentence, with a name in it. The only question that matters: is that name yours, or your competitor's?
For twenty years, being findable meant ranking on Google. That's still true - but it's now only half the job. The other half is being the answer the AI gives before anyone clicks anything at all. That second half is AI visibility.
Why "I rank on Google" isn't enough
Here's the uncomfortable bit: you can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible in AI search. When someone gets their answer straight from an AI Overview or ChatGPT, they often don't click through to anyone. No click, no visit, no enquiry. If the AI didn't mention you in that answer, you didn't exist in that conversation - no matter where you sit in the classic rankings.
I work from Australia, where AI Overviews already sit on top of a huge share of searches. So this isn't a prediction I'm selling you - it's what I watch happen every week. The businesses that get named in the AI answer get the enquiry. The ones that don't, don't.
AIO, AEO, GEO - the alphabet soup, translated
You'll see a pile of three-letter acronyms thrown around. Most are the same idea wearing different hats. The honest version: AI visibility is the outcome. AIO, AEO and GEO are just the levers you pull to get there.
| Acronym | Stands for | In plain English |
|---|---|---|
| AIO | AI Overview Optimisation | Getting cited inside Google's AI Overviews - the answer box at the top of Google. How to rank in AI Overviews → |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimisation | Being picked as the direct answer an AI gives, not just a link it lists. |
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimisation | Getting generative AIs (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) to surface and cite you. GEO vs AEO explained → |
Don't let anyone charge you three separate fees for three separate "services" here - they're facets of one job. If you want the SEO-vs-AI distinction spelled out, I did that here.
Not every question is winnable - and that's the whole point of an audit
Here's the piece most people selling "AI visibility" won't tell you: for some questions, you will never show up, no matter how good your page is. Knowing which is which is the difference between spending your money well and setting it on fire. It comes down to how the AI answers, and that changes with the question.
Ask ChatGPT "what is AI visibility?" and it answers from what it learned in training - no web search, no sources, no citations. There's no slot for your website. You can't win it, however good the page.
Ask "best AI visibility consultant near me" or "AI visibility services Sydney 2026" and the AI does go and look - it searches, pulls live pages, and cites them. That's where your business can be named.
And it shifts by surface: Perplexity searches almost every time, AI Overviews pull from live search, ChatGPT browses for some questions and answers from memory for others. The same query can win you a citation in one tool and be completely closed in another.
How you actually improve it (once you know where you can win)
No magic. The businesses that get cited by AI do the same unglamorous things well:
Be clear about who you are
AIs repeat what they can understand. If your site is vague about what you do, who you serve and where, the AI has nothing solid to quote. Plain, specific language beats clever copy.
Earn trust signals a machine can read
Real author names, real credentials, real reviews, consistent business details across the web. The authority signals that make AI cite you →
Answer the actual questions people ask
Structure content around real questions with clear, liftable answers - the kind an AI can pick up and quote whole.
Connect your content so it holds together
A well-linked site reads as one authoritative source, not scattered pages. The single most underrated lever. My internal linking strategy →

Frequently asked questions
Is AI visibility the same as SEO?
No. SEO gets you ranked in the list of links. AI visibility gets you named inside the AI's answer - which increasingly happens before anyone looks at the links. You want both, but they're different jobs.
Can I have good Google rankings but poor AI visibility?
Yes, and plenty of businesses do. You can rank #1 and still never be mentioned in the AI Overview or by ChatGPT. They're scored differently.
Why can't I show up when someone asks an AI "what is [my topic]"?
Because broad "what is…" questions are usually answered from the AI's own trained knowledge - no web search, no citations - so there's no slot for any website. You win the questions that trigger a live search instead: commercial, local, "best… near me," and current-year queries. That's exactly why you audit before you write.
How do I check my AI visibility?
Test the questions your customers would actually ask across ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity, and note two things: whether the question even triggers a live web search, and whether you're named, linked and described correctly - across many prompts, not one. An audit does this systematically.
How long does it take to improve?
Often faster than classic SEO. Because AIs re-read the web constantly, clear, well-structured, trustworthy content can start getting cited in weeks - though competitive terms still take sustained work.
Find out where you actually stand
The businesses getting named by AI right now aren't the biggest - they're the clearest and best-organised. That's fixable, and it's the whole of what I do. Start with an audit that tells you where an AI names you, ignores you, or gets you wrong.
