Cited, not ranked.

An AI visibility expert gets your business named inside AI answers, not just listed in Google's blue links. The first thing to unlearn: there is no position 1 in an AI answer. You are cited, or you are invisible. And ranking well in Google does not get you there on its own.

Source: Ahrefs, 863K-keyword study, Feb 2026 (figures rounded). This share fell from about 76% a year earlier; a separate BrightEdge study put the overlap near 17%. Ahrefs notes part of the drop reflects better citation detection, not only a change in Google's behaviour. Being top 10 helps; it does not guarantee the citation.

15 things every business should know first

In my testing
01

SEO and AI visibility are one system

Rank in Google and Bing with a strong site. Get named in an LLM with a strong presence off it too, especially LinkedIn and YouTube. They feed each other: no search presence usually means no LLM mention.

In my testing
02

Top 3 in Google is not top answer in AI

Every model has its own retrieval layer. The sources it pulls are often not the top results, and they shift day to day. In my studies, the overlap is thin.

03

Get clear before you optimise

What is your value, your mission, your purpose? If it is muddy, the model retrieves a mess. Two checks: is your topical authority scattered in Search Console, and what does an LLM say when you type your brand name?

04

It takes time, like SEO

A model will not grab your new message overnight. And cited today does not mean cited tomorrow. Consistency wins, not one big push.

05

Robots.txt and schema do not get you cited

Anything that helps a machine read you clearly is worth doing. But structured data is a structural aid, not a ranking factor. It is no magic switch.

In my testing
06

Reputation counts more than you think

Bad reviews or rough talk on Reddit colour how a model presents you; these systems weigh third-party signals. It will not block a citation, but it is part of the picture.

07

Audit first, then pick your terms

You cannot get cited on everything at once. Find where you stand, then choose the few terms worth the fight. Focus is the whole game.

08

There is no "rank" in an LLM

Google gives a position. An LLM does not; you are cited or you are not. The fastest way I spot a fake expert: they promise to "rank you number one in ChatGPT." Walk away.

09

FAQs help; schema does not buy citations

Structured data is a structural aid, not a ranking factor. But an FAQ is the exact question someone types into ChatGPT, with a clean answer under it. That shape is what helps.

10

You will not beat an LLM on generic terms

For broad queries, getting quoted is extremely difficult; the model writes better and has a thousand sources. Win where a real business is the answer: commercial, local, "best X in [place]."

11

Google still sends the traffic. SEO first

LLM traffic is a small slice today. Build the SEO foundation, then layer AI visibility on top. And do not hire two experts; the right one does both.

My take
12

Your expert should run their own studies

I keep three or four running at a time. Otherwise, what is the point? Ask which sources get retrieved for your terms; that tells you where the work is.

My take
13

Ask for case studies. Test their claims

LLM conversion is hard to track. Analytics gives a read. Be sceptical of anyone selling a paid "superior tracking model"; you can do a lot of it yourself.

14

Nothing beats knowing your customer

Before SEO, before LLMs: is your offer clear? Does your site answer what they need to buy with confidence? Get that right and everything downstream works.

My take
15

A good expert costs money. Here is why

You pay for testing across many clients and for judgement a model cannot give: your business, your content, your constraints. Shortcut it with a chatbot and you usually pay more later.

Point 10, made visual

Two kinds of question. Only one is winnable.

The AI answers differently depending on the question. That single fact decides where your money goes, or gets set on fire.

Answered from memory

"What is AI visibility?" The model answers from training. No web search, no sources, no slot for your page.

You cannot win it, however good the page.

Answered by live web search

"Best AI visibility consultant near me." The model searches, pulls live pages, and cites them.

That is where your business gets named.

How to spot a real AI visibility expert

  • They say "cited," never "ranked number one," in an LLM.
  • They run their own studies and can name the sources retrieved for your terms.
  • They are upfront that conversion tracking is hard; no magic tracker for sale.
  • They tell you which terms you cannot win, not only the ones you can.
  • They start with an audit, not with writing.
FAQ

Straight answers

What does an AI visibility expert do?
Gets your business named and cited inside AI answers, across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini, not just ranked in Google. The work starts with an audit of where you are cited, ignored, or described wrong, then targets the terms your customers use where you can actually win.
Can you rank number one in ChatGPT?
No, and anyone promising it is a warning sign. There is no ranking position inside an AI answer the way there is in Google. You are cited or you are not. A real expert talks about citations, not positions.
Do I need SEO if I want AI visibility?
Yes, and you do it first. AI systems retrieve from indexed, crawlable, trustworthy pages, so a weak site gives them little to work with. Google still sends most of the traffic today. Build the SEO foundation, then layer AI visibility on top, with one person who does both.
How do I choose an AI visibility expert in Australia?
Ask three things: do they run their own studies, can they name which sources get retrieved for your terms, and will they be upfront that conversion tracking is hard? Ask for case studies. Be wary of a paid "superior tracking model" or a promise of number one in an LLM.
Will schema and FAQ get me cited?
Not on their own. Structured data and FAQ formatting are structural aids that help a machine read your content clearly; they are not ranking factors. FAQs help mostly because they mirror the questions people type into an AI, with a clean answer underneath.
Why is an AI visibility expert expensive?
You pay for continuous testing across many clients, and for judgement a model cannot replace: understanding your business, your content and your constraints. Shortcutting it with an AI tool alone usually costs more in the end.
